After the legalization of gay marriage in the United States, a few alarmists had warned that the extreme right would not take that loss very well. In fact, many thought they would turn their sights on transgender people and that is exactly what has happened. The first battle is being fought in the bathrooms of America. Mark my word when I say that it will not stop there. If they win the bathroom battle, they will go after more and they will not stop until they use the momentum against the transgender people to overthrow gay marriage.
The plan is quite brilliant and I give the extreme right a lot of credit for coming up with something that shouldn’t be working but clearly is. To win the bathroom battle, they first need a villain that people can detest. Enter the threat of child molesters and rapists exploiting transgender rights to gain access to bathrooms. They create an imagined threat and use it to justify the harm their actions are going to have on transgender people. Of course, as these bathroom bills heat up a few of them have begun to let their hate of transgender people show through the cracks.
David Omdahl a republican from South Dakota had a few things to say about transgender people.
“I’m sorry if you’re so twisted you don’t even know who you are, a lot of people are. It’s about protection to kids. I don’t even understand where our society is these days … they’re treating the wrong part of the anatomy. They ought to be treating it [points to his head].”
Imagine if this guy ever became the governor of South Dakota. Many other people from the Pro Bathroom Bill groups have also let their distaste for transgender people slip. With the comments that do get out, it is very easy to see that these bills have nothing to do with protecting women from predators but are legislated hate aimed directly at transgender people.
In many states they are failing which is good until we realize that they may have a few more cards up their sleeves yet. Last August, in a National radio interview, I predicted they would send men into the women’s bathroom to prove their point. And that has now come to pass as a man in Washington State has done just that as he claimed the transgender protections gave him every right to be in a girl’s locker room. There has been a call for men to invade women’s bathrooms to create false validity to the predator myth. Hopefully lawmakers see this as the ruse it is. However, it worries me that we could see a huge public swelling of support towards these bathroom bills as a result.
It may be that the only solution to this tactic is to change the current bills to better define what qualifies as gender identity. Better wording could eliminate definitively the ‘I feel like a woman’ today loophole. In most difficult aspect of doing that, there could be to ensure we do not exclude gender fluid people from bathroom use. This is not going to be an easy battle and it will get worse; there are already glimpses of that. Bills have already been introduced to prevent transgender people from changing gender markers. There was even talk of a possible future bill to legalize transgender bullying.
If we do not stop the extreme right and their bathroom bills now, they will build momentum and they will plow through our rights. When they finally have stripped transgender people of their rights you can be sure they will turn that boat around and come at gay marriage again with a full tank of steam. Trust me, they have not conceded their fight against gay marriage. If I am right, the annulment of gay marriage is their final goal and we need to stand up long before they get there and ensure freedom and rights for all of us.
