Of all the things people tend worry about on a daily basis, worrying about which restroom to use typically isn’t one of them. Unfortunately that isn’t the case for a high percentage of transgender people living in the world today. We are often faced with a big decision when it comes time to relieve ourselves. Often that decision is be between being arrested, being harassed, or even being violently attacked. The uncertainty of all those is enough to make anyone fear using the restroom. Today I would like to talk about the necessity of offering transgender people peace of mind when it comes to restroom use
Lately this has been a relatively popular topic as more transgender people are opening up about who they are. We are seeing bathroom bills come into play, which are aimed at making us out to be a threat to others who are simply trying go to the bathroom. Luckily, most of these bills are being ignored. But much like a lot of the media coverage on the transgender community these kinds of things are what fuel the fire for the people working against us. We even have a presidential candidate here in the U.S. who has made such assumptions, and then backed up his reasoning by saying
“Now, I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE, I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.”
This is absolutely disgusting whether you are kidding or not. The crowd’s laughing about his remark afterward was equally grotesque.
This is as much a civil rights issue as being transgender is in general. The belief that offering transgender folks a gender-neutral restroom is enough to correct this issue is not the case. We deserve the right to use whichever room matches our gender identities. There has never been a case of someone misusing this right but yet so many people are making the assumption that it’s “bound to happen.” This is clearly a delusion conservatives are using to work against us. We have even seen an ad campaign for one of the bills that shows a cisgender male entering a restroom after a little girl goes in. The ad claims this will happen as long as we let Transgender people use the room of their matched Identity. The fact that these kind of ads are even being released is offensive ,not only us, but to everyone.
As long as the momentum keeps building the way it has been the restroom issue shouldn’t be a problem much longer. We just need everyone to understand that we aren’t trying to gain this right to abuse it. We are the one’s who are afraid when we are in these rooms with you. Honestly, you have nothing to worry about and it is absolutely safe for you to go about your business because that is all we are there to do too.
